Valentines Day 2010

Valentines Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14th throughout the world.  It is a traditional day when lovers express their love for each other by sending cards flowers or gifts.

The day is closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes but since the 19th Century this has given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

Some Facts

  1. It is estimated that over a billion Valentine Cards are sent each year

  2. Valentines day is the second largest card sending holiday of the year behind Christmas

  3. 29% of adults purchase flowers or plants as gifts for Valentines Day, of those 58% are men and 42% are women

  4. 48% of flowers bought as a Valentines Gift are Red Roses

The Price of the traditional Rose Gift

  • Florists cannot be blamed for the increase of the flowers, in particular Roses around Valentines Day as there are many factors that affect the price, the main one being a simple case of supply and demand:
  • Valentine's Day inspires the heaviest demand for long-stemmed roses, and several rosebuds must be sacrificed to create a single long-stemmed rose.
  • After the Christmas season demand for red roses is filled, growers need 50-70 days to produce enough roses for Valentine's Day.
  • Winter's shorter daylight hours and higher energy costs hamper efforts to grow large rose crops.
  • Inclement weather often requires extreme measures to ensure that flowers are delivered in time.
  • To fulfill the tremendous number of orders for Valentine's Day flowers, florists have to hire additional help, work longer hours and acquire extra delivery vehicles and drivers.

So how can you express your feelings without breaking the bank?

I have listed key points that will help you this valentines Day show the one you love just how much, without spending too much.

1.     Make your own Valentine Card.  Traditionally Valentines was the mutual exchange of love notes.  Express your feelings in writing on some beautiful parchment paper.  The fact that you have taken the time to do this and that the words have come from you will mean more than any mass produced card that thousands of significant others will receive.

2.     If you wish to present your Valentine a gift, think beyond the box of traditional chocolates, flowers and jewelry.  Plan a romantic day out; be it a walk in the park, followed by a home cooked meal and your favorite movie.  It should be about showing how much you care rather than how much you can spend!

3.     If a Valentines Day without flowers sounds like an argument waiting to happen, think about what flowers your partner or loved one actually likes.  Although Red Roses are the traditional flower it would make your gift far more personal if the arrangement contained their favorite colors or blooms.  For those who are married think back to your wedding day, what flowers did you have?  It’s the personal touch that matters

4.     Lastly, who says that February the 14th is the day that we should express how we feel? There are 364 more days (unless it’s a leap year) where you can show just how much you love that special someone.
